ARTIST STATEMENT – For me, the subject of a painting is the painting itself: the color and texture of the paint, the composition, and the way the paint is applied. The act of painting is a conversation between these three voices and the success of the painting depends on how they interact. I paint for the sheer pleasure of participating in this conversation. I have been painting for twenty years, studied at several art schools including the San Francisco Art Institute and spent five years doing an independent study with Cornelia Schulz of UC Davis. Generally speaking, my work is inspired by nature, music, and zen philosophy. My most recent work, since moving to Abiquiu last summer, has been greatly inspired by this magnificent land (who isn't?). While still definitely abstract in intent, these paintings clearly reflect their inspiration and are named accordingly.
