ABOUT THE DRUM
The drum is one of the oldest musical/communication instruments of our existence. With its ability to transport entrance and soothe, the "heart beat" rhythm it provides can feel like a direct link to life, spirituality and the pulse of Mother Earth. Used in ceremonial practices, as well as celebrations, the drum lives at the center of rhythmic expression.
ABOUT THE PROCESS
I began drum making more than 200 drums ago. After finding a cast-away hide and a partially hollowed out cottonwood limb, my first drum was made in 1998. As a life long musician, I knew certain criteria would have to be met to make a good sounding drum. And, as a life long human being, I also knew my heart had to go into my work to create a worthy instrument. I use rawhides from Elk, Cow, Deer and Buffalo: that I prepare, cut and tie over cottonwood shells. The wood grain, knot holes and burls dictate the design much more than I ever could. You might say, I listen to the drum long before it is made. Prayers are also part of the process, to insure the soundness of the instrument; as well as blessings to the drummer.
