Artist Statement

Al Lostetter's educational path from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then to Yale University Graduate School of Fine Arts set the technical and intellectual groundwork for his current art, but his life in the West and especially Abiquiu became his maturing influences. Becoming a participant within the complex cultural interactions with the land, has led him both perceptually and spiritually to create his vibrant trompe l'oeil paintings.

In a singular and intentional way, he has woven his imagery around that of the feather whose iconic meaning is intended to cause reflection and meditation on its various potential meanings. Beyond being fascinating and colorful, it allows the bird mastery of the earth's dimensional spaces into it's mysteriously guided journeys....leading us to thoughts of transformation and even possibilities of loosening the bonds that keep us from understanding our potential and experiencing the sense of the pervasive soul.
