Artist Statement

A descendant of New Mexico bead artists, Blythe has spent much of her life learning and perfecting the art of beadwork. She is inspired by the natural beauty of her Utah surroundings, where she currently resides, and the landscape and Native American pueblos of New Mexico, where she makes annual visits to her mother, a well-known textile artist in Abiquiu. Blythe celebrates the beauty of the explosive colors of fall, the snow-tipped white pines, or the mossy stones under a waterfall by capturing their isolated moments in beads. Her work has appeared in a number of art festivals and exhibitions, and she is proud to be able to continue this art and pass it down to her children as part of their heritage.

Blythe is also an award-winning colored pencil artist and earned a BFA from Sam Houston University in Texas. Drawing upon the influence of artists like Caravaggio, Turner, and Matisse, Blythe turns her fascination with the intricate stone facades and sleek steel and glass of city architecture into detailed, complex, colored pencil creations. She finds the skyline in Utah, with the mountains in the background, and the sunset over the Great Salt Lake gifts she experiences everyday and enjoys giving these gifts permanent expression on paper.

Blythe's work has been exhibited in the Springville International Spring Salon; the National Art and Congress Show; the Dixie College Invitational Art Show; the Nora Eccles Gallery Fifth Annual Color Pencil Society Show, where she received the Best of Show award; the Second Annual Color Pencil Society Show, where she received First Place; and many others. She has served as president of the Colored Pencil Artists of Utah and continually studies new techniques and enjoys collaborating with other artists.
