MEDIA: Micaceous pottery

Living in Abiquiu calls forth the artist in everyone! This place is magic! In my "real life" I was a dentist, in Houston, for 25 years. Now, I am "in to" several art forms: I do custom gold-leaf frames, retablos, tinwork, and am studying oil painting! Also, I make wine from the Baco Noirs in my tiny vineyard, and intend to bake bread any day now! My 4 kids and 4 grandbabies all live in Texas, and love northern New Mexico almost as much as I do.
My favorite art is making micaceous pottery. I even like to gather the material and process it into useable clay. What a thrill when it comes out of the fire, intact! Right now I am making purely decorative hearts and rosebuds, and every now and again, a casserole or beanpot. My pieces are signed MNW, for Many Noises Woman, a Comanche great-great grandmother.
It’s hard for me to leave my home and studio! My place is in Los Silvestros de Abiquiu, where the red rocks begin. Most of the house is over 100 years old, and has been home to many artists, and, like myself, many artist wanna-bes.
