As a figurative ceramic sculptor, my goal is to create a connection with viewers that transcends physical form. The human face is one of the best avenues for this connection. Recently, I have been fascinated by the concept of vulnerability. When we are vulnerable, it breaks down barriers and allows us to honestly connect on a human level.
My work often features the jackrabbit, a symbol of vulnerability and cleverness in the desert southwest. By blending the female form with the jackrabbit, I can explore these qualities in a unique way while also paying homage to my roots in New Mexico.
I celebrate imperfection in my work by intentionally adding marks, scratches, and other anomalies to figures, acknowledging how our experiences change us. Rather than seeing these changes as negative, I hope viewers can see them as opportunities for growth and understanding.
Society sells the idea that only perfection is beautiful, but I challenge this idea by finding beauty in imperfection. As an artist, my goal is to evoke an emotional response and deepen our understanding of the human experience. Through exploring how vulnerability connects us, I hope my work resonates with viewers.
